Walking Cane Care
Walking canes are sometimes a necessity to getting around. Whether you are elderly or disabled a walking cane will give you freedom you may not otherwise have.
Most people have more than one cane, they use an older cane around the house and out in the yard this cane has probably be around for some time and is an old favorite, a bit beat up but good and reliable. Other canes they use when leaving the house and for special occasions. Walking canes should be stored in a safe place out of the way, or in a cane rack on display.
Caring for your walking cane is important for a couple of reasons. Keeping your walking cane clean and cared for will help avert accidents that can further injure you. A clean walking cane is a good-looking walking cane! With proper care your cane can be not only an aid to mobility it can be an accessory wherever you go.
Caring for walking canes
When you get back from an outdoor walk or at least once a week take a few minutes to brush off any dirt/dust from your walking cane.
As you brush off your cane pay attention to any loose bits of wood, nicks or scratches. Loose pieces should be removed or may be glued back on. The rubber tip should also be inspected for wear chips and replaced at least once a year, rubber tips cane get hard and brittle with age and not grip properly causing a fall. Cleaning your cane depends on the type and finish it has, for wood canes that have some sort of finish like lacquer or varnish you can use a damp cloth with mild soap, and afterwards use a clean dry cloth to dry your cane.
Wood canes with no finish will require fine wood care product like teak oil, linseed oil or a good furniture type care products, please follow the instructions on the label.
Metal or aluminum canes cane be inspected and clean with a damp cloth with mild soap, and afterwards use a clean dry cloth to dry your cane.
